In a recent listing of the most popular travel destinations of 2007,
Tokyo, Japan was listed among the top five. Besides the wonderful thought of seeing this beautiful and cultural city, Tokyo also offers its visitors an urban experience that is different than those found in other major destinations, as well as less expensive than a visit to London or New York City.
Tokyo is also very easy to explore, even with the language barrier, and offers many means by which you can see the sights and visit the city’s most popular stops. Most people prefer to walk around
Tokyo, however, if you prefer not to walk, or you can not walk for long periods of time, a public transit system is available, and is very convenient and manageable.
Some places that you simply must see while you are visiting Tokyo include the Shimokitazawa neighborhood, which is sometimes compared to Greenwich Village in
Manhattan, New York. This quaint little neighborhood is filled with cafes, boutiques, vintage stores, and very inexpensive noodle shops. Omotesando is another wonderful place to see, as it is the
Tokyo version of the Champs-Elysees that is found in
Paris. This beautiful spot offers a wide boulevard that features popular designer stores, and it is also the home of the Omotesando Hills Mall, which is famous for its beautiful architecture. If you are a sports fanatic then you might want to check out a Sumo match or a baseball game at one of
Tokyo’s two resident team stadiums.
Other things of interest include Tsukiji Fish Market, which is one of the largest fish markets in the world, and the NHK Studiopark, where you can gain a behind-the-scenes look at NHK broadcasting. If you are into the spa world, then Kusatsu Onsen and
Izu
Peninsula both offer wonderful
hot springs for your enjoyment. Whatever your interest, one thing that may help you to decide on a visit to
Tokyo is the currency exchange rate. The exchange rate for the yen, which is
Japan’s official currency, is less than one percent of the US Dollar. So, for Americans, this makes for another great reason to see all that
Tokyo has to offer. Whatever the reason, whether it be budget, culture, or beauty,
Tokyo has something that will make your visit worthwhile. From the wonderful cuisine to the historical nature of the many ancient structures, you will likely never forget your trip to
Tokyo.
