Hawaii is a tremendous place to visit. It is home to the highest sea mountain, the most active volcano, birth place of hula and surfing, the youngest geological formation in the world, and above all, home to some of the most warm/friendly people in the world.
Hawaii is made up of six islands: Kauai, Molokai, Oahu, Maui, Lanai, and Hawaii’s
Big
Island, each having its own persona, tourist destinations, adventure, and activities.
Beginning with Kauai, it is home to the wettest spot on earth -
Mount
Wai’ale‘ale – that receives 485 inches of rain per year. So, arm yourself with a rain coat/umbrella before hitting the island. Also to discover in this small island are many plunging ravines, breathtaking cliffs, cascading waterfalls, canyons, never ending sandy beaches, and bays. Adventure enthusiasts could spend a day hiking up the 3,500 foot
Waimea
Canyon, enjoy kayaking in the
Wailua
River, the only navigable river in
Hawaii, or let their jaw drop in awe as they fly in a helicopter past the mighty cliffs on the Napali coast.
Molokai, on the other hand, stands out from the rest in that half of its settlers are of the true Hawaiian ancestry. Major attraction here is the many outdoor adventure spots, the valleys and hills; a true place to spend the vacation away from the hustle of daily life. Not to miss are the
Kalaupapa
National
Historical
Park and the enchanting boating along the North shore to watch the tallest sea cliffs on earth.
Oahu is home to the state capital and is one of the most populated places in
Hawaii. From a tourism perspective, it is a melting pot of cultures, natural wonders, modern arts, and entertainment, something every tourist will savor with excitement. Things to do include surfing at
Waikiki
Beach and the beaches of
North
Shore, marvel at the splendor of
Iolani
Palace, and visit its art galleries and the USS Arizona Memorial at
Pearl Harbor.
Oahu also boasts a thrilling nightlife and exotic Hawaiian and American cuisine.
Maui also has an assortment of outdoor activity opportunities, ranging from hiking to water sports. It is also a popular shopping destination in
Hawaii. Places of attraction include the 10,000 foot
Haleakala Crater, Iao valley, and the Hana highway, with all the breathtaking sceneries on the way. Other activities to pursue in
Maui include whale watching, golfing, hiking, and the entertainment its beaches provide in plenty.
Lanai, without even a single traffic light, is a perfect setting to spend some time in solitude and peace, away from the hustle and bustle of day-to-day urban life. Must visit places include Keahiakawelo, the “Garden of the Gods, Hulopoe Bay, and the hike up the Munro Trail to savor the panoramic view of the sea and neighboring islands it provide.
Finally, the
Big
Island, which is bigger than all the islands taken together, is home to some of the interesting anomalies. This volcanic island encompasses 11 of world’s 13 climate zones: one could see everything from lush vegetation to snow capped mountains, deserts to sand beaches in its 4,028.0 square miles area. Places of interest include
Hawaii
Volcanoes
National Park, Mauna Kea,
Waipio
Valley, Puukohola Heiau, and the entertainment center of
Hilo.
In short,
Hawaii has everything for every season. For the tourists, it is just about finding enough time to spend for a good vacation in the island. More info on
Hawaii is available in the state tourism website.
